Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants

Hardcover Verified download. I really enjoy this book, and I think it's packed full of a lot of good information for the beginner aquascaper.

However, I've noticed that most of the pictures in the Plant Profiles section are of the plants grown emersed i. If you want to see more accurate pics of what these plants will look like in your tank, I suggest looking online for pics! After many years in the hobby, this is still my go-to handbook for common aquarium plants. There is a lot of very useful information in this book. Apart from the plant profiles, Hiscock gives a great overview on how to keep and care for plants, as well as explaining how the plants themselves grow, their effect on an aquarium, and how to keep them thriving.

In fact, this is the second time I've downloadd this title, this time as a gift for someone new to the hobby!

In no sense guilty Top Contributor: I wish I had gotten this before I started planting each tank. I would have done some things better. It's not thre most comprehensive book.

I have seem similar books used by my FLS that cover more plants but it will give you and idea what you should need to plant a successful planted aquarium for you situation.

I have a coffee table aquarium. They are very difficult to plant due to light coming from the bottom, algae issues and needing to be it a cooler room temperature to avoid water condensing on the table top.

Thanks to this book I know I should use Java Ferns and Crinum Thaianum which are amphibious so they will remove waste efficiently and fill the top surface of the water nicely since neither require a substrate actually prefer not to be in one and can do OK in only low moderate light.

This is a very informative book with great photos. It provides a lot of information that is understandable for hobbyists new or experienced with planted aquariums. My husband and I both refer to this book for our home tanks and at our jobs at a family owned fish store.

Great book for a novice!

It has a lot of color illustrations and describes in detail plant ecology, biology of an aquarium and different species of plants. Awesome to have when planning for a new tank!

There is a ton of great information in this book and even more importantly lots of great pictures that make identifying plants really easy. It's my go-to book for just about everything. I would have liked to have seen ranges accompanying each plant description. I loved this book! It has very in-depth information. I've always had problems with algae in my planted aquarium and this book explains several reasons why this occurs and how to prevent it.

It explains, in detail, nutrient requirements, lighting options, ways that fish and invertebrates interact with plants, and which plants are best for beginners. It explains complicated information with clear diagrams. Finally, there is a great list of plants with photos and info. The only negative thing I can say is that this book is probably not the best for someone who only wants one or two plants in their aquarium and is looking for a simple introduction.

This book isn't very simple, but it does offer clear explanations of many topics relating to growing plants in your aquarium. I thought this book would only be a list of plants but the first section goes into detail about how to set up a planted tank and how to care for it. I find that useful for beginners, but I would have just liked a book with a list of plants and their requirements. Great book to have in any aquarium book collection. See all reviews.

I really appreciated the extra details especially geared towards aquarium keepers such as poisonous to snails, or new growth cuts light for shorter species.

Perfect book for a beginner guide to aquarium plant. However if it could describe the latest EI or ADA method in preparing cycled tank that would be great for the latest edition. Aug 11, Lauren rated it really liked it Shelves: Lots of good info on popular aquarium plants and keeping planted aquariums healthy.

Might refer to it again if I some day expand to a 10 gallon tank. Probably wouldn't download for the home library. Jun 13, Steven rated it really liked it. Excellent for beginners.

Hiscock P. Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants

It has large color photos of dozens and dozens of plants in the aquarium plant guide section. The one thing that I didn't like is that the Aquascaping section only had drawing, not photos.

It's hard to get a sense of what the aquarium would really look like from the illustrations. Aug 31, Kevin rated it liked it. Good book for beginners. Not a very good reference, but worth owning.
